Challenges to development: processes of change towards global justice

The V International Conference of Development Studies (V CIED) is an initiative of the Spanish Network of Development Studies (REEDES) and will be organised by Hegoa, Institute for International Cooperation and Development Studies, part of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It will be held in Bilbao, from the 27th to the 29th of May 2020, in Bizkaia Aretoa and the Department of Economics and Business of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

The V CIED, titled Challenges to development: processes of change towards global justice, will focus on those politics, processes and strategies necessary in order to establish alternative routes orientated towards a social and systemic transformation for global justice, which will allow for the ending of inequalities. The conference will deal with the crisis of the cooperation paradigm as value-guide that structures society, and as expression of the development model crisis which has been dominant throughout decades. The difficulties in order to generate viable strategies in a new context that, nonetheless, make it fundamental to build and work in alternative paradigms to competence, as well as the tendency towards the commodification in all spheres will also be debated. In this sense, it is vital to recuperate the objective of social justice and the value of cooperation as pillars of other development models (or the overcoming of this concept), as well as for a global society that places the sustainability of the life, the rights and the dignity of human beings in the middle.

The conference will be structured starting with the keynote speech, the plenary sessions and the working sessions distributed around 15 thematic lines. The plenary sessions will promote debates on transitions to other models, the alternatives around the organisation of the economy, and the solidarity/cooperation as paradigm for social and political collective action, as an answer to the paradigm centered in competence. The conference will also take a look at how Development Studies can influence the new challenges that are contemplated in this framework. Each thematic line will correspond to a panel with parallel sessions, where the participants will be able to present papers with their research results.

It is a scientific meeting of an international nature that looks for contributions from different fields of study, as well as from civil society. In this way, it is open to the participation of both Development Studies professors and researchers, and of students and social agents interested in the problems of development and global society.

The Congress will be structured around 15 thematic lines.
